What's new-
in the garden...
June is well underway in the garden. Red Hills Azalea (Rhododendron Colemanii) is in full bloom (above).
We’ve harvested a second cutting of basil (below). Hopefully, there will be another by the first week in July. Bugs are out. I’ll have to spray some neem oil solution.
Okra is all above ground, but needs some hot weather to really grow. I hope I’ve planted enough this year to have some pickled to put by.
A new arrival in the garden (below) is this spider azalea (Rhododendron stenopetalum var. lineearifolium) It will have a pink lavender bloom resembling bee balm in form. It will reside in a pot for a year or so until we find its sweet spot.
Native to Japan, spider azalea often blooms twice a year, so with any luck, we may see some color this fall.
The Bear Creek tomatoes are all grounded now except for a few that are bound for Madison with a friend. If they do well, we may be canning tomatoes this year. We should at least have some to share. We have about forty plants started from seed.
Bear Creek is a cross between Cherokee Purple and Pink Brandywine. I’ve never grown this variety before, but it has the genes for a good slicing tomato. I’ll keep you posted.
