Tsuga-
Japanese Hemlock...
This Northern Japanese Hemlock, a.k.a Tsuga diversifolia, is the latest arrival in the Story Garden. This dwarf cultivar, ‘Loowit’ will only be about a foot tall in a decade. It will reside in this pot for a year or two, at least, as we try to find it’s happy spot.
Native to the high mountains of Hokkaido, it may present a challenge to keep comfortable during our hot summers but for this beautiful little tree, we will do our best. I love the natural bonsai-like form.
Tsuga, which can grow to 90 feet tall in their native range, always make me think of Kawabata’s novel, ‘Snow Country,’ although you won’t find much about them in the story.
