The native azalea show that began here in April came to a rousing close down in the Glen with a stellar performance by the Swamp Azalea (Rhododendron viscosum). The creamy yellow blossoms of this ‘Lemon Drop’ cultivar offer a delightfully crisp aroma after a shower.
Not all great azaleas come from an up-scale nursery. I found this one in the garden department of a chain grocery in Black Mountain NC. Like most of its kin, Lemon Drop is deciduous. It sports a fiery foliage display in autumn. Give it some afternoon shade and it will do well for you.
Gorgeous for sure!
