All morning Little Bear followed Creek on her bouldered course down the valley, sometimes scrambling through mazes of rhododendron and laurel, sometimes floundering among stones, over his knees in icy water. Occasionally, there would be a relatively clear stretch of shoreline where he could stroll along in the deep shade of hemlocks older than any human alive. It puzzled, though not alarmed him, that he did not recognize any of the landscape around him, nor see any sign of the road he knew ran along the side of the ridge above the stream. He thought he might cross to the opposite bank if he found a decent place to ford, and try to find the road. Being lost had always been a temporary experience for Little Bear, however, and had never been particularly unpleasant. He was as much at home in the woods as anywhere…
