Feldengrove-

the understory...

We call it the Feldengrove, the dwarf conifers and other evergreens I planted in containers at the Main Muse’s Feldenkrais studio. The trees are what it’s about for me, but more passers-by comment on the filler plants.

Most of the “understory” plants are cuttings left over from prunings elsewhere. They function as a sort of “living mulch” to conserve moisture in the soil. Two pots containing magnolias have been without any ground cover and dry out noticeably faster than their neighbors.

I put some hosta in there that should fill out nicely over the next few weeks. I’m interested to see how they might cohabit with the trees which will reside in these containers for at least one or two more years. The hosta came from Tim Nifong at Happy Hosta in Thomasville NC. Thanks to Tim’s careful prep and packing, these liners arrived in great shape even though the U. S. Postal Circus required nine days to deliver the package across 150 miles.
